Lawn Tips

Keeping a lawn heathy is one of the most eye catching elements of your landscaping. Here are a few spring tips to get your lawn off to the right start.

Dethatching:
Thatch is the dead grass, leaves, and stems that lay at the base of every lawn. Removing excess thatch allows water and air to penetrate the soil and encourages new grass growth.

Aeration:
The natural tendency of any yard is to compact and become dense. This is primarily caused from mother nature and general walking and playing. Aeration is the process of putting holes in your  yard. This allows water to absorb further into the soil and encourages deeper root growth. Not only is a well aerated lawn able to breath and grow properly, but it is also less effected by drought and hot weather.

Over Seeding:
Over seeding is one of the best tricks and investments for thick grass. Grass reproduction slows down after a few years, and a lawn that has not been over seeded will thin out over time. Over seeding and having a thick turf is also the best weed prevention on the market. Do your over seeding in the spring after dethatching and aerating is completed.

Improve your soil:
The best thing for improving soil quality is top-dressing with compost or processed manure. A thin layer can be raked into your lawn to start building up the soil quality (no more than a 1/4″). This is more effective after aeration as the compost will work deeper into the ground. The process of improving poor soil requires patience. You should repeat this process every spring to build a quality lawn.
